HONOLULU (AP) - The traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokulea has arrived in Bali after the latest leg of its around-the-world journey.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that the canoe arrived at the small Indonesian island Thursday after an 11-day voyage from Darwin, Australia.
The boat crossed the Indian Ocean and faced new weather-related challenges.
Apprentice navigator Jenna Ishii said in a video from Hokulea's deck that the canoe was temporarily under tow by its escort vessel during a period of light winds. Several days later, the navigator faced large waves and winds that sped the canoe across the ocean.
Bali welcomed the Polynesian canoe to Sanur Beach with a ceremony featuring local dance and Hawaiian hula.
