LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) - A brush fire that forced the closure of a highway on the island of Kauai is one of about 70 suspicious blazes on the island this year.
Lihue newspaper The Garden Island reports that the latest brush fire broke out around 4:20 a.m. Friday in Wailua off Kuhio Highway. Flames from the 20-acre fire came within feet of various roadways, forcing authorities to close the highway and another street in both directions for about two hours.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and is considered suspicious.
Officials say dozens of brush fires on the island this year had multiple ignition points, leading authorities to believe they were intentionally set.
