KONA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Guy Kitaoka calls it the catch of a lifetime. He hooked a marlin grander off Kona Tuesday afternoon.
"We were supposed to go and catch some ahi for a friend's party. So we tried for ahi and that was slow so we put out live bait and aku and within half an hour, we were hooked up to it," says Kitaoka.
The fight took an hour-and-a-half with an electric reel that his friend had on their 20-foot Gray White boat. But at 14.5 feet long, and 84 inches around, the fish couldn't fit so a nearby charter boat brought it to shore.
The marlin weighed 1368 pounds.
"It was exciting," says Kitaoka, "We were stoked, a whole bunch of guys came down to the pier."
Kitaoka turns 57 Wednesday, he calls the catch a great birthday present.
Kitaoka gave the fish to a friend to make marlin sausage.
He and his fishing buddy will return Thursday to try and catch that ahi for the party.
