LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Roughly 5,000 gallons of wastewater overflowed Tuesday along North Honoapiilani Highway, according to Maui County officials.
The overflow, at the Lahaina Pump Station No. 2, was caused by a control wire failure at the pump station. From about 11:30 to 11:45 a.m., wastewater flowed from a sewer manhole along the highway into a storm drain and discharged into the Kaanapali Golf Course pond.
The area has been cleaned and disinfected. Warning signs were also posted.
Bacteriological tests are being conducted to determine if the spill reached the ocean.
State Department of Health officials have also been notified.
