No tsunami expected after 7.0 quake near Indonesia

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has occurred near Papua, Indonesia.

The quake was at a depth of 33 miles according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Magnitude 7.0 quakes or greater are capable of causing widespread and heavy damage.

The earthquake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports, "Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. Repeat. A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
