With food already being pretty expensive on the islands, why would someone want to pay the extra money on organic produce?
Organic is definitely a bit more expensive, especially here in Hawaii, so let's discuss WHY we might choose organic fruits and veggies and offer some tips on how to purchase these foods at the store.
Going organic is mostly about reducing herbicide and pesticide exposure. Did you know that since 1977 the number of pesticide in use in the US has risen from 200 to 18,000? We have gone from using 400 million pounds of pesticides to 4.5 billion pounds per year! These pesticides don’t just evaporate or dissolve… unfortunately; they persist and end up finding a home in our body’s, especially our fat stores. It's alarming and research finds that ingesting these chemicals from non-organic produce attributes to heightened disease risk, hormone disruption, and weight gain.
We don’t always have a pocket book that will justify buying all of our food from organic sources so I wanted to show you some of the fruits and veggies deemed best and worst to buy non-organic so you know where to spend your money and where you can afford to save.

Another way to reduce the number of pesticides on your produce is to give them a “bath” in water and apple cider vinegar for 10 minutes.
