Maui police officers assaulted while trying to break up large brawl

KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Maui Police officers responding to reports of a large brawl in Kihei Sunday night were assaulted during the ordeal, police say.

Police received numerous calls around midnight Sunday from residents who witnessed a disorderly group of at least 100 people at the Kihei Kalama Village area, also known as “The Triangle”. In addition, security officers on site had reported that a 34-year-old man was lying on the ground unconscious as smaller fights were taking place in the middle of the road.

When police officers arrived, they found large groups yelling and taunting each other from both sides of Keala Street between Foodland and The Triangle. Police officials say that officers tried to break up the crowd, but they were assaulted. MPD has not revealed the extent of the officers’ injuries or the status of the man who was unconscious.

The suspects who assaulted the officers fled the scene – one was a man who ran toward the Sansei Restaurant and jumped into a gray Toyota Tacoma with four doors and dark tinted windows.

Police are asking for the public’s help to identify the people who were involved. Anyone with information may contact Detective Jeff Mahoney of the Kihei Criminal Investigation Division at 875-5409 or Crime Stoppers at 242-6966.
