North Shore rental buggies get green light

NORTH SHORE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The City and County's Department of Customer Services has approved registration for a north shore buggy rental business' fleet of gas powered vehicles.

Matt and Heather Brown, owners of Aloha Buggies, shipped the vehicles from the mainland in January under the auspices they would be able to register and rent them. However, the Honolulu DMV did not have a proper classification for the vehicles, and was unable to register them.

The buggies sat unused for six months as losses piled up for the business.

Director Sheri Kajiwara worked successfully with counsel to find a legal interpretation to register the vehicles.

Brown released a statement, praising her efforts. "While the process was definitely long and painful, we have to give credit to specifically Sheri Kajiwara and Galen Onouye for the long hours of time they spent working to provide a solution for us."

The business will re-open July 20.  Brown estimates he lost between seven to nine thousand dollars a month while the business has shuttered.  To help recoup some of the losses, he has set up a crowdfunding page:
