Firefighters battle 2 separate building fires on Maui

WAIEHU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Firefighters responded to two separate fires that broke out on Maui on Tuesday.

At around 11:15 a.m., firefighters responded to a building fire – that started from an air conditioning unit -- on Kilou Street in Waiehu.

Upon arrival, crews found the room – used as a business office -- towards the back of the home on fire. They were able to extinguish it by 12:50 p.m.

The two occupants were temporarily displaced, but no injuries were reported. One female occupant was home at the time and reported the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but damages were estimated at approximately $70,000, according to the Maui Fire Department.

About eight hours later, firefighters responded to a structure fire on Ulupua Place in Spreckelsville. A female occupant was home at the time and said she smelled smoke and heard popping sounds coming from the garage.

Crews managed to get the fire under control by 8 p.m.

Three people total were temporarily displaced and stayed with neighbors. No injuries were reported.

The cause of this fire is also under investigation and damage estimates are unknown at this time.
