A Kauai man has been sentenced to four years of probation and 10 days in jail for insurance fraud and attempted theft on July 9.
Albert Banach pleaded no contest to the charges after submitting false claims to Progressive Insurance Company. He did not have car insurance when he collided with a female bicyclist last September and contacted Progressive Insurance within an hour of the accident. Banach then attempted to have the insurance company pay for the bicyclist’s medical expenses, which exceeded $3,500.
“Defrauding or attempting to defraud an insurance company is not a victimless crime,” said Insurance Fraud Administrator Colleen Chun. “Stealing from an insurance company raises insurance premiums for all policyholders, so we urge everyone to stay informed and report any suspicious incidents to our division.”
