Tropical Depression Four-E has formed in waters to the east-southeast of Hawaii, and forecasters believe it could become the first named storm to approach the islands this year.
At 5 p.m., the depression had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph with higher gusts. It was located 1025 miles east-southeast of Hilo and was moving to the west-northwest at 17 mph.
The storm is forecast to continue strengthening into a tropical storm. If the system develops in the East Pacific the storm would be Dolores or Ela if it develops in the Central Pacific.
