KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Grandfather and grandson were killed while vacationing on Maui after their Ford Taurus, rental car collided with a Ford F-150 truck in Kahului Monday night.
According to police, the pickup truck was traveling east on Hana Highway at around 8:50 p.m. The sedan was traveling north and attempting to make a left turn onto Hookele Street, when the two collided.
The driver of the Taurus, a 72-year-old man from Washington, and his grandson, a 16-year-old from Idaho died at the scene. The man's wife and another grandchild were taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
Police sources tell me the driver of the pickup truck got out and ran from the scene. Officers found him hiding in some bushes nearby. The man was treated for minor injuries and released by medics at the scene. Sources also say he did not have a valid license or insurance and Maui Police are working to see if alcohol was a factor.
These fatalities are Maui County's 10th and 11th traffic fatalities this year as compared to 14 at the same time last year.
