2 brawls at popular Puna surf spot prompt increased police presence

Big Island police are stepping up enforcement after two fights at the Pohoiki boat ramp in Puna Sunday afternoon.
Police responded to a call at 4:10 p.m. about a large brawl, involving about 40 people, and the sound of a gunshot. Police later confirmed that a semi-automatic pistol was fired into the air, and the weapon was found in a nearby bush area.
Police identified the person who is believed to have fired the gun and are continuing to investigate.
A 33-year-old man was found with assault injuries to his face and body. He was reported to be in stable condition at the Hilo Medical Center. A 15-year-old boy was also at the scene and was reportedly punched and choked, but declined any treatment.
Police arrived at the boat ramp again later that day for another incident, involving a smaller argument. Junior Santiago, 32, of Keaau was arrested for an outstanding bench warrant.
