LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A video is circling around social media right now showing what appears to be a teenager beating up an older man on Maui.
Hawaii News Now's Maui police sources confirm they are investigating the incident.
The video is short, only ten seconds long and it's unclear what happens just before the recording starts. But, the short clip is upsetting people across the state.
Hawaii News Now's sources say 18-year-old Jonah Ventura is the man seen in the video body slamming an older homeless man in Lahaina. The fight happened in the parking lot of the McDonald's on Papalaua St.
It was posted to an Instagram page called "Hawaii Scrapz" Sunday morning. The page features fights from across the state.
Waianae resident Bubba Medeiros came across it and said he was disgusted.
"Basically the story when hit my heart because to me, what I watched in the video is unacceptable…if he wants to fight, hop in the ring. There's more better things to do than fighting on the streets,” Medeiros said.
"In the video, you can clearly see that the man is not even trying to fight, he can't even defend himself. To pick on an elderly person like that, I don't know why he did that. And honestly it just hurts me knowing what this generation of kids is coming to nowadays in Hawaii," said Medeiros.
On social media, Ventura defended his actions, saying before the camera was rolling, the homeless man threw the first punch, and he was just defending himself.
The investigation is still in its early stages.
