WAHIAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man died and another was critically injured following a motor vehicle crash on Kamehameha Highway near the Leilehua golf course in Waipio Acres.
According to Honolulu Police, it started with a hit-and-run, when a man in his early 60's was driving his SUV on Higgins Road and hit a pickup truck. When the driver of the SUV began to drive away from the scene, the driver of the pickup truck and a witness vehicle followed the SUV.
Officials say the driver of the SUV then began traveling at speeds of over 70 miles per hour. When the SUV started going through a construction zone, the pickup truck and witness vehicle backed off.
A construction worker was seated at the back end of a flatbed truck waiting to pick up some traffic cones when the SUV plowed into the back of the flatbed, critically injuring the construction worker.
The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.
The construction worker is a man in his early 30's who suffered severe leg injuries.
Police initially closed Kamehameha Highway in the southbound direction as they completed their investigation, but the road has since been reopened.
Officials say speed was a factor in this collision.
