Kihei man dies after found unresponsive off Sugar Beach

KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A Kihei man died Tuesday after he was found unresponsive in waters off Sugar Beach.

Authorities said Darin Kobatake, 50, was paddling a one-man canoe at around 6 p.m., but a bystander on a stand up paddle board heard yelling from behind and saw the canoe flipped over and Kobatake unconscious in the water.

The bystander attempted CPR before calling for assistance.

The U.S. Coast Guard was able to locate the two approximately 1 mile offshore and transported them to the Maalaea Harbor. Despite lifesaving efforts, Kobatake died at the scene.

An autopsy will determine his official cause of death.
