Business Report - 6/8: HFMA Awards, Big Island Jewelers, Hawaii Biotech

The Hawaii Food Manufacturers Association had its annual awards over the weekend - Honolulu Cookie Company and Aloha Tofu won the innovation awards - start-up of the year, Maui Gold Pineapple - product of the year, Kilauea Fire Hot Sauce - Byron Goo won advocate of the year - supplier of the year, HFM - Meadow Gold won for community service - lifetime achievement. Roselani Ice Cream.

Some family-owned businesses wind up closing because subsequent generations aren't interested. But not always. Chance Carpenter, who father and uncle founded Big Island Jewelers more than 30 years ago, is joining the family business as a goldsmith apprentice. Big Island Jewelers is on Alii Drive in the next building north of Chillin' on the Bay.

Hawaii Biotech is looking for new office and wet lab space, after Diagnostic Laboratory Services bought the space it has been leasing in Aiea. Lorin Gill reports in Pacific Business News the company has been looking for space at the UH Cancer Center, but it's not clear to me that the university is moving fast enough to make something happen.

Kailua-Kona held its first Kona Town Night Market over the weekend - that's shaping up to be a regular monthly thing. Kona Brewing is the main sponsor. Proceeds went to the Donkey Mill Art Center down in Holualoa.
