WAIMALU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - - A motorcyclist died early Saturday morning after a major motor vehicle collision on the H1 Freeway.
The incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. near the Waimalu off-ramp.
A vehicle traveling in the west bound lane, about half a mile east of the Waiawa overpass, pulled off to the side of the road due to mechanical issues. Shortly after that, another vehicle pulled off to the side of the road behind the first vehicle.
Almost immediately after the second vehicle pulled of to the side of the road, a motorcyclist struck the second vehicle from behind.
The motorcyclist, a man from Waipahu, sustained numerous injuries and died at the scene.
The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.
The driver and passenger of the struck vehicle were uninjured. The driver is being identified as Mililani man.
Speed and alcohol do not seem to be factors.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m. all westbound lanes at the Waimalu off-ramp were shut down. They were reopened about three hours later
