LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police have arrested the driver of the SUV that struck and killed a Lawai man early Monday morning in Nawiliwili.
Evan Craft, age 34, was arrested Tuesday for Manslaughter and Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an Intoxicant (OVUII). He has since been Released Pending Investigation.
Craft was driving the SUV that killed 37-year-old Michael Helppie upon impact, according to an autopsy.
Police believe Craft and Helppie got into some type of confrontation at a nearby bar just before 1:45 a.m. The confrontation escalated outside when Craft's SUV struck Helppie then ran over a concrete piling, where the SUV became stuck.
Craft was located nearby at Kalapaki Beach and taken into custody.
