Body found in Big Island stream days after mother disappears

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A mother from Texas now living in Hawaii was supposed to be getting on a flight out of Kona Monday night, but she never made it.

Bobbie “Jackie” Carnathan vanished Wednesday morning after zip-lining by herself at Botanical World Adventures in Hakalau.

The tour takes people soaring above Umauma Stream, waterfalls, and lush green gardens.

Carnathan's tour started at 9:30 a.m. and ended at 11:00 a.m. A Facebook page called

says she went to eat at a nearby deli with other people from the adventure. It said she had a couple of hours to spare before the bus came back to pick her up. But this is where Carnathan disappears.

On Monday morning, there was a possible break in the case, but not a good one.

A call came into Hawaii Island police around 11:30 a.m. saying a woman's body was found in the stream near the area where Carnathan was last seen.

Hilo police say the woman's body was partially submerged in the water, but detectives could not make a positive identification.

Firefighters pulled the body from the stream and an autopsy will be done to determine identity and cause of death.

It's unclear if the body is connected to Carnathan's disappearance, but family members are holding onto hope.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Hawaii Police Department at (808) 935-3311.
