HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - All lanes of Nimitz Highway were closed in both directions near Alakawa Street for a short time Monday afternoon, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
Initial reports from the DOT indicated the closure was due to a fuel leak. However, officials with the Honolulu Fire Department say it is a water main break, and workers in the area are reporting a diesel smell.
By 2:30 p.m., officials reported that some lanes had opened in each direction, but traffic remained slow.
Alternate routes to Nimitz Hwy include Dillingham Blvd., N. King Street and the H1 Freeway.
