HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Young Brothers reports lower cargo traffic in the first quarter. Overall shipments were down 2%, and the only port with MORE volume was Kawaihae, on the west side of the Big Island, shipping milk to Honolulu and landscaping materials to Sand Island. One reason for the decline: construction hasn't taken off on neighbor islands, and if you're not building, you don't shipping building materials.
The Hawaii Tourism Authority reports strong visitor business in April, and as a result visitor spending for 2015 is now running ahead of last year. That's the good news. The bad news is, it's only ahead two tenths of a percent, which means it's not keeping up with inflation. Inflation is currently really low, but not THAT low.
Hotel occupancy got better last week - all four counties higher - Big Island 68, Kauai 76, Maui 78, Oahu 89% full.
