WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - New retailers, a school, parks and more than 1,400 residential units could be popping up in Central Maui as part of the Waikapu Country Town project proposal.
Waikapu Properties is proposing the development of nearly 500 acres within and around the Maui Tropical Plantation. An Environmental Impact Statement Preparation Notice with the state Department of Health said the Waikapu Country Town would be built on each side of Honoapiilani Highway in two five-year phases.
The proposed project also includes an estimated 6-mile network of pedestrian and bicycle paths.
The project's agricultural component encompasses more than 1,000 acres, and the document said it hopes to establish an agricultural park, farmers market and a limited amount of renewable energy production on the lands.
The owner of Maui Tropical Plantation, Mike Atherton, is leading the project.
Public comment on the project will be accepted until June 22.
