SOLOMON ISLANDS (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two large earthquakes hit Santa Cruz Islands on Friday, 127 miles east-southeast from Kira Kira, Solomon Islands.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the first quake was at a depth of 6.1 miles and had a magnitude of 6.9. The second quake to strike the same area had a depth of 6.2 miles and was a magnitude 6.8.
Magnitude 7.0 quakes or greater are capable of causing widespread and heavy damage.
The earthquakes were not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
