HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaiian Word of the Day is kapa. The Hawaiian word for barkcloth, kapa was traditionally made out of paper mulberry, hibiscus or breadfruit bark. Barkcloth was used extensively throughout the Pacific and known by a similar name, tapa. Hawaiian kapa differs from that found elsewhere in Polynesia as Hawaiians pioneered the usage of an artist specific watermark. These watermarks decorated kapa from Hawai'i with tiny designs that could be seen when held up to the light. The Hawaiian word of the Day is kapa.
