WAIANAE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 25-year-old man has been indicted for murdering a 3-year-old girl in Waianae, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
Joshua Kalili was taken into custody at 6:10 p.m. Thursday where he was charged with second-degree murder and abuse of a household member.
Police said the incident happened on Oct. 21, 2014 when Styzilee Reyes-Butay was taken to the hospital with suspicious injuries. While there, she became unresponsive and was pronounced dead.
The Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide, saying the 3-year old died from blunt impact to her abdomen.
Kalili is the mother's boyfriend and was the one who took her to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center in October.
But family and friends of Kalili are quick to defend him saying the girl suffered from health problems that were misdiagnosed by doctors. They also say she had recently been injured after a hard fall.
"There were some incidents that happened prior to her passing that weren't in their home. Such as jumping off a bunk bed and falling, getting hurt," says family friend, Abigail Eli.
She says Styzilee was very active and insists that Kalili did not hurt the girl.
"We call him the gentle giant," Eli says.
Kalili does not have a criminal record.
His bail is set at $500,000.
