HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu fire investigators have determined the cause of a fire at the Ala Wai Plaza Skyrise condominium was "electrical in nature," according to HFD spokesman Capt. David Jenkins.
The fire was sparked inside a storage unit of a resident's eighth-floor unit, said Jenkins.
Hundreds of people living in the 38-story residential building on University Avenue were evacuated after alarms sounded around 12:45 a.m. Friday.
Fire officials say nearly two dozen firefighters responded to the scene in four minutes of the alarm call and managed to contain the fire to the apartment. They extinguished it around 1:30 a.m.
The apartment's residents told Hawaii News Now they battled the flames with several fire extinguishers and buckets of water to keep it from spreading until crews could arrive. They say a neighbor carried an elderly female relative through thick smoke and down eight flights of stairs to safety.
Jenkins said the fire caused an estimated $2,000 in damage.
There were no major injuries.
