HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A well-known Oahu couple died in Southern California after being struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver.
80-year-old Lonnie and 76-year-old Patricia Tiner died early Monday morning, hours after their truck was rear ended by a Prius in Twentynine Palms, California.
Police say the Tiners were brought to a local trauma center with critical injuries after the DUI suspect crashed into their truck near Joshua Tree around 9 p.m. Sunday evening.
Lonnie was a well-known oral surgeon, and his wife was born and raised on the island of Kauai.
Police arrested the driver of the Prius, 21-year-old Mariah Natividad, for DUI and vehicular manslaughter. Natividad sustained minor injuries during the crash.
The Tiners had been married for 55 years and have children and grandchildren who currently live on Oahu.
