No tsunami threat to Hawaii after large earthquake off Santa Cruz Islands

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A strong earthquake has shaken an area off the Santa Cruz Islands, but was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The quake was measured at a magnitude 6.9, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake happened at 12:48 p.m. HST, about 11.1 miles west of Lata, Solomon Islands.
