HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A series of events are being held in order to bring together opposing sides on the controversial Thirty Meter Telescope project.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that a series of informational meetings starting Tuesday will seek to educate the community and open communication surrounding the $1.4 billion telescope project.

The event organizer Judi Steinman says the crux of the debate is that the two sides are speaking different languages. Those who support the project are speaking the language of Western science and economics while those camping out atop Mauna Kea are speaking that of Hawaiian culture and tradition.

Steinman says there will be no debate between guest speakers during the events.

The speakers at Tuesday's event include a protest organizer, an astrophysicist and an official with the Office of Mauna Kea Management.
