WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The City and County of Honolulu said Monday that a large hammerhead shark was spotted near Waikiki Walls.
Ocean Safety officials said they received reports of the sighting, but did not have further details.
Xavier Vallarta, a surf instructor, said he was out in the water at around 5:30 a.m. when he spotted a fin about 3 feet above water. He estimates the shark to be between 10 and 12 feet.
"This was one big shark," he said. In fact, the shark was so big that other beachgoers initially reported two sharks in the ocean.
Officials said they will not close the beach because the hammerhead is not considered "aggressive," but crews will remain in the area to monitor the situation.
More details will be posted as soon as they become available.
