The Hawaiian Word of the Day is Kahoolawe.
Once used as training grounds for kahuna and navigators, Kahoolawe came under control of the navy following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. For the next few decades, Kahoolawe was used as a weapons range where the military tested its munitions.
In 1976 a small group of Hawaiians formed the Protect Kahoolawe Ohana which eventually succeeded in permanently stopping the bombing of their island.
