A raging fire destroyed a two-story house on the Big Island Friday night.

Anxious neighbors in Kailua-Kona watched as the flames came dangerously close to their homes.

"I can't really say if I heard like an explosion or just something like a loud boom,” said Michael Mateaki.

“So I ran upstairs to my kids and I just see a huge cloud of smoke, just crazy cloud of smoke couple houses down from me," he said.

Firefighters said the blaze broke out around 7 o'clock. Before they arrived, they said a neighbor heard an explosion and saw flames bursting out of the second-story windows.

"I could see the flames, it was pretty high. But the smoke was what was insane. And there's a house right next to it, and lucky thing that house didn't catch on fire," Mateaki said.

Eight fire crews rushed to the two-story wooden home in Sea View Circle.

They arrived to find the home fully involved with out-of-control-flames erupting near neighboring homes.

The blaze was under control within 30 minutes and extinguished two and a half hours after that.

Firefighters said no one was home at the time of the fire, but neighbors are still in shock.

"I have a family and I can only understand what that family is going through because right when I got downstairs I just looked at my kids like, "Damn, that could have been us," Mateaki said.

No one was injured. The home is a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
