HALAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu firefighters are investigating a fire Friday at the Puuwai Momi Public Housing area in Halawa. The fire broke out just before midnight in building seven, according to HFD Capt. Dave Jenkins.

About 30 firefighters responded and contained the fire to an 2nd floor bedroom and put it out in about 10 minutes.

Emergency Medical Services personnel say they transported three people to the Queen's Medical Center for injuries related to smoke inhalation. A 46-year-old woman was in critical condition, while her 13-year-old daughter was listed in serious condition and 17-year-old daughter had minor injuries.  The older 20 year old daughter refused treatment at the scene. EMS officials say the mother went into respiratory distress after the smoke made her pre-existing health conditions worse.

The 17-year-old said she and her sister were treated and released in the morning hours, but their mother remains in the ICU at the hospital.

She told Hawaii News Now she was downstairs when the fire happened and heard some arguing then people yelling for water. She said she believes a cigarette belonging to some of her mother's friends may have accidentally ignited the fire.

A fire investigator is looking into the official cause. No damage estimate is currently available.
