Coast Guard suspends search after receiving may day call

KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Coast Guard has suspended its search in waters near Maui after receiving a may day call on Wednesday.

The Coast Guard sent ships and aircraft vessels to the area, but the agency lost contact with the caller before they could get an exact location, or determine what type of vessel it may be.

The Coast Guard did get a "line of position" from the call and believe it came from the waters of Kihei.

Crews from Oahu and Maui began searching at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, but found no signs of a missing boater or any other trouble.

This is the second may day call in the past two weeks that appears to have been a false alarm.
