No tsunami expected after 7.4 quake near Papua New Guinea
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has occurred near Papua New Guinea at 3:44 p.m. Hawaii time.
According to the USGS the quake was at a depth of 39 miles.
Magnitude 7.0 quakes or greater are capable of causing widespread and heavy damage.
The earthquake was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reports, "Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii. Repeat. A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
