WAIPAHU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A portion of a brand new lane is open in the far righthand lane of the H-1 Freeway near the Waipahu exit.

The opening of this sixth lane means that drivers now have two lanes headed westbound to Waianae in the morning commute when the zipper lane is open versus one during that time. And that means once the zipper lane is closed, four lanes will then be open during the evening commute.

Hawaii transportation officials say over the next four months, every two weeks, weather permitting, they will work to reveal more sections, opening the lane up backwards towards the Pearl City/Waimalu off-ramp area.
