Parties draw hundreds to watch Mayweather defeat Pacquiao

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hundreds of fans attended parties around the state to watch the long-awaited "Fight of the Century" between Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and Manny Pacquiao.

One of the largest of those parties drew more than 500 people to the Coral Ballroom of the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. They had paid $50 each for food, drinks, and a live high-definition feed of the fight on three huge screens.

"It's a huge, big fight, it's exciting among the Filipino communities," said former boxing champ Jesus Salud. "They're making hundreds of millions of dollars. Oh gosh, I wish I was there, too!"

For a lot of folks, being at the party was as close as they could get to actually being in Las Vegas for the boxing match. And it didn't take three guesses to figure out who most of the people were rooting for.

"It's good to see this many people showing up, and mostly everyone's for Pacquiao," said radio and television entertainer Lanai Tabura.

"Actually, being in the islands, you gotta stick with the islanders, who you, the Philippine islands," said another boxing fan, Dennis Bohner.

There was definitely excitement in the air, especially when the Pac Man made his way toward the ring. Many in the crowd cheered whenever the fighters landed a punch, but especially for Pacquiao.

Even though the crowd was with Manny, those with experience had the feeling that the undefeated Mayweather had the advantage.

"My heart goes to Pacquiao," said Salud. "I love the guy, he's a great role model for everybody. I just give a little edge to Floyd's side."

In the end, that's what happened, as Mayweather won a unanimous decision.

There were quite a few Mayweather fans in the crowd who were happy with the outcome. But for the rest, a little disappointment that the Pac Man wasn't the victor.
