Fourth-seeded UH is set to face No. 5 seed Penn State (20-9) on May 5 at 8:00 p.m. PT (5:00 p.m. HT) in a play-in match, as announced by the NCAA on May 2. UH leads the all-time series over Penn State, 14-8, having most recently sweeping the Nittany Lions at the Outrigger Resorts Invitational (May 1). It is the Rainbow Warriors first time in the NCAA tournament since 2002, the same year UH defeated the Nittany Lions, 3-1 in the semifinals and won the championship title over Pepperdine in the finals (which was later vacated). UH is 2-1 over PSU in post-season play.

Conferences receiving automatic qualification include Conference Carolinas, Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The remaining two teams were selected at-large without geographical restrictions.

In 2014, Loyola Chicago defeated Stanford 3-1 to capture its first national championship.
