Authorities identify Hawaii based marine found dead in California barracks

Gunnery Sgt. Eugene Jones, of Montgomery, West Virginia, assigned to Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, was found unresponsive in his barracks room at 8 a.m. Wednesday April 29, 2015, at the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy, in Camp Pendleton, California.

Gunnery Sgt. Jones checked into the SNCO Academy to attend the Advanced Career Course Monday April 27, 2015. Gunnery Sgt. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by medical responders.

The Marines with Marine Corps Base Hawaii are saddened by the loss of one of their Marines and send condolences to family and loved ones.

"Gunnery Sgt. Jones was an integral part of the Installation Personnel Administration Center and Headquarters Battalion team,” said 1st Lt. Nicklas Anthony, Headquarters Company Commander, Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Base Hawaii. “He was as genuine as he was reliable. Gunny was family oriented and fostered that mentality and closeness within his section and unit, making us all his family. He always had a positive attitude and readily went out of his way to help the team, regardless of what was needed. He will be sorely missed."

Jones is survived by his wife and three children.

The cause of death is currently under investigation.
