Police investigate a deadly pedestrian accident in Kapolei
KAPOLEI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Honolulu traffic investigators say a 70-year-old Kapolei woman was hit and killed in a crosswalk on Kamaaha Avenue in Kapolei around 5 a.m. Friday. The victim lived in the area and appeared to have been coming home from a midnight shift at work, according to police.
Police say the suspect, a 56-year-old driver of a red pickup truck, told them he was headed to work and didn't see the woman prior to the collision.
Investigators have opened a negligent homicide investigation. However, the driver has not been arrested at this time.
Speed is being investigated as a possible factor, but alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this case.
Police are also looking into whether nearby street lights were operational.
Two westbound lanes on Kamaaha Avenue, between Kapolei Parkway and Kaiau Avenue, were closed while police investigated.
