No tsunami threat to Hawaii after magnitude-6.8 quake shakes Papua New Guinea

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A powerful earthquake struck an area near Papua New Guinea Thursday night, but it was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The magnitude-6.8 quake happened at around 10:05 p.m. near the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea.

No major damages or injuries have been reported. 

This was the second large earthquake to occur in the region on Thursday. The first one happened shortly after midnight Hawaii time.
