HONOLULU (AP) - The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is expected to discuss its position on building one of the world's largest telescopes near the summit of Mauna Kea.

The $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope project is facing opposition from those who say building it on Mauna Kea would desecrate sacred land.

Opposition has been mounting since dozens of protesters blocking the construction site were recently arrested. The company building the telescope agreed to extend a construction moratorium.

Telescope opponents pushed for OHA to hold a meeting on the issue. OHA has scheduled a special meeting Thursday to discuss its position and allow for public comments. It's unclear how OHA's position on the issue could affect the project.

Thirty Meter Telescope spokeswoman Sandra Dawson says there will be many telescope supporters at the meeting.
