Re-striping issue on H-1 confuses westbound drivers in Pearl City area

PEARL CITY, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Drivers headed westbound in the morning are advised to use caution on the H-1 Freeway near the H-1/H-2 merge as Hawaii Department of Transportation officials say the rain has caused some problems with re-striping work, making the lanes difficult to navigate.

Drivers complained that when the zipper lane was open, it appeared that “poor striping” was leading them right into the zipper lane barrier on the inside left lane.

HIDOT says contractors were working on re-striping the H-1 Freeway westbound lanes in the Pearl City area when workers encountered a rain storm.

Spokesman Tim Sakahara said, “The normal materials being used would not stick on the wet pavement. Having already started the work, the crews had to adjust and put down temporary striping.”

Sakahara said that barring wet weather overnight again, the lines will be adjusted, “to be more clear for drivers.” He added that, “crews are working on contingency plans should it rain again overnight.

Drivers are urged to drive with caution in the work area and obey traffic laws. Officials say once complete, the additional lane will help ease congestion and keep traffic moving for westbound drivers.
