A strong earthquake has shaken an area near Fiji, but it was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The quake was measured at a magnitude 6.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Officials say the depth of the quake was too deep to create a tsunami threat.

The earthquake happened at 6:40 a.m. HST.
