Officials say 12,000 customers are without power on Kauai because of a generator outage on Monday.

Rolling blackouts have already begun across the Garden Island, which is about 30 minutes in each area until 10 p.m.

The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative says their second largest generator went offline due to a mechanical issue at 5:15 on Monday afternoon. Their main generator was already offline due to a scheduled maintenance.

The KIUC is asking customers to conserve electricity until the issue is resolved.
