HONOLULU (AP) - A federal housing department lack of affordable housing has kept more than 40 veterans homeless despite receiving vouchers for all or part of their rent.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports affordable housing hasn't kept up with the growing number of veterans in Oahu, up more than 21 percent from last year.

The U.S. Department of Housing's veterans' affairs arm offers Housing Choice vouchers, which have been successfully used by 400 veterans since 2008. Coordinator Rachelle Russo said the community needs to make more affordable housing available.

A veteran may be granted a voucher, she said, but can't use it unless the property meets minimum requirements. A studio apartment, for example, can't cost more than $1,100 including utilities.
