Flood Advisory extended on Maui

Flash flood warning issued for Maui Flash flood warning issued for Maui
HAIKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

 [Update 11 a.m.]

The flood advisory for Maui has been extended until 12:45 p.m. Forecasters at the National Weather Service said while the showers across the windward areas of the West Maui mountains have become lighter, stream gages in the area remain elevated and the area of rain remains stationary.

The advisory covers an area that includes but is not limited to Kanaha Beach Park, Wailuku, Waihee, Spreckelsville, Pauwela, Napili, Kapalua, Kahakuloa, Kaanapali, Huelo, Hookipa Beach Park, Honolua, Honokowai, Honokohau and Haiku.

The rain is coming from a very slow-moving frontal cloud band that is forecast to spread rain from Maui to the Big Island. While rainfall amount should remain relatively modest into the afternoon, the Valley Isle has had a pretty good soaking, and the saturated ground will mean a higher likelihood for flooding. The moisture is also interacting with the mountains and squeezing out more rainfall through the day.

[Update 7 a.m.]

The flash flood warning for Maui has expired, but a flood advisory remains in effect until 9:45 a.m.

[Original story]

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for parts of Maui until 7 a.m.

At 3:51 a.m., radar showed an area of persistent heavy rain near Haiku, about 16 miles east of Kahului. The area of heavy rain was reported to be nearly stationary and gages along the Honopou Stream showed a rapid rise in water level.

Pauwela was listed as a second location in which flash flooding may occur. The warning may need to be extended beyond 7:00 a.m. if flooding persists.
