BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaii Community Correctional Center was put in lockdown after four inmates attempted to escape Saturday morning.

Officials say Malaki McBride, Airiel Jost, Douglas Kamiola, and Kawaipuna Noa tried to escape at approximately 2 a.m.

The inmates used a piece of furniture to ram a door open in their housing unit. They exited through the door and were quickly restrained outside their unit by corrections officers. They did not get outside the HCCC secured perimeter. No injuries were reported.

“Staff immediately implemented crisis response procedures to safely end the situation and prevent the escape,” said PSD Director Nolan Espinda. “I commend the staff for their quick reaction and a job well done”.

An investigation is underway. Family visits at HCCC are cancelled for the day and have been rescheduled for Sunday. Hale Nani, their reintegration and work release center, is holding visits today.
