Local Connection: Hawaii Book and Music Festival is coming

By: Rick Blangiardi

One of the great things about Hawaii is our tradition of storytelling.  Those times of “talk-story” are an important part of making our island state the wonderful land of Aloha that it is.

The best “talk-story” time all year happens this weekend, May 2nd and 3rd, on the grounds of Honolulu Hale.  It's the 10th annual Hawaii Book and Music Festival presented by Bank of Hawaii, and everything is free, even the parking.
This year there are over 150 different events with more than 600 different authors, musicians, and performers. Be sure to bring the keiki for storybook readings and a special appearance by national PBS Kids host, Mr. Steve.

You can meet Pulitzer Prize winning writers, see prize-winning hula halau direct from the Merrie Monarch Festival, listen to great slack key, and hear local authors telling tales of Hawaii's past, present, and future.  Proceeds benefit Hawaii Literacy and Read-to-Me International.

There's a link to the festival schedule on our Hawaii News Now website.  Come out and enjoy Hawaii Book and Music Festival this weekend.  You'll be doing yourself a favor, and you'll be doing Hawaii some good.
